There is a number of corn insect traits available in transgenic corn for 2012. When choosing a hybrid, it’s important to purchase and plant one that provide protection against insect pests that can be a problem in Delaware (european corn borer, corn earworm, fall armyworm, and black cutworm). We typically do not see heavy pressure from corn rootworm. A new pest to watch for (not a problem yet) in Delaware is the western bean cutworm, which some traits provide protection. Click on the picture below to access a chart from University of Wisconsin Extension that references the brand name and insect pests controlled by individual traits. Remember-refuges vary by brand, company, and trait. Be sure to talk to your seed salesman about how much refuge to plant.
